Before any dog owner embarks on a breeding program, there are many principles of breeding that he should understand and anticipate, for the future of the individual puppy and of the breed depends on using the knowledge that is available. Many a fine family strain has been ruined by indiscriminate breeding.
Unfortunately, when a breed becomes popular, there is an influx of novices who are ignorant of the perfect specimen of the breed and haphazardly breed any two dogs so long as they have pedigree papers and possibly a few champions in their backgrounds. This is inviting disaster for the breed. Beginners must find out what a good specimen in their breed is and have a willingness to learn and study the breed and breeding per se.
