Historic Florence is fairly compact and the sights described on the following pages are easily reached on foot or by bus. The sights are grouped within the four areas shown on the map below, each of which has its own section within this book. Most visitors head first for City Centre East, with the magnificent Duomo, the heart of the city. City Centre North is associated with the Medici, while City Centre West has smart shops. Across the Ponte Vecchio is Oltrarno, with the treasures of the Palazzo Pitti.
