As part of forming a sense of ethnic identity children not only learn what it means to be part of their group, but they also come to prefer their own group, seeing it quite positively and viewing other groups less favorably. Studies indicate that ingroup favoritism develops first in children by about age five. Children on holiday initially prefer their own group without looking at the out-group negatively. Attitudes toward out-groups develop gradually in the early elementary school years. Out-group prejudice appears less likely to develop when children attend a multiethnic school where they have interactions with children of different groups and when they can describe negative qualities about the in-group.
