Coolest family vacations for UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS South Africa THE ECONOMY OF South Africa was for many years agricultural; that is, until the late 1800s, when diamonds were discovered near Kimberley (1867) and strains of gold were found along the banks of the Witwatersrand River (1889). A whole new era opened, hopeful miners populated the country well into the 20th century. It was not until the 1940s that South Africa’s two major industries, mining and agriculture, became developed enough to produce a variety of commodities. The country was still very much dependent on the rest of the world for manufactured goods. Starting with the end of WORLD WAR II, 1945, South Africa began manufacturing much of its own commodities, to the point that it became an efficient distributor of goods to major urban centers throughout the sub-Saharan region. Since the 1940s, South Africa has experienced a series of across-the-board growth rates”high and low” from hungry years when the economy seemed doomed to failure, to years when the economy was among the highest and most enviable in the world. For example, the South Africa that existed in the early 2000s, a magnet to foreign investors, bears little resemblance to the country of only a few decades ago. Coolest family vacations 2016.
