When mothers felt that their role was important and that they were doing a good job, and when they felt positively about the baby, their husband, and life in general, their babies developed well. The attitudes of mothers of full-term babies were only moderately related to the baby’s progress. Parents responsiveness and social stimulation of preterm babies are related to children’s academic and social success through young adulthood. Parents of premature babies need to understand their strong and important role and the child’s capacity for healthy growth, for our culture seems to hold subtle negative beliefs about preterms. When mothers were told an unfamiliar six-monthold baby was premature, they were more likely to rate the child as smaller, less cute, and less likable, even when the child was actually full term.
