Coccidiosis should be suspected in all cases of continuing unexplained diarrhea and anemia. Puppies are more severely affected. The first signs can be a mild diarrhea which progresses until the feces become mucoid and blood-tinged. The puppy becomes weak and debilitated. If the dog is untreated, a cough develops, along with running eyes and nose, much as in distemper. The infection progresses until convulsions occur and the puppy usually dies.

When puppies recover, they may be carriers, passing the coccidia on to other dogs. Dogs in good health can be carriers. Known carriers should be isolated and strict sanitation observed. The carriers should be treated, and their quarters and runs cleaned with an antiseptic.
