This dominance led to the prominence of women in the early days of the labor movement. For example, in Elizabethton, Tennessee, two rayon plants were built that together employed around 5,000 mostly female workers. In 1929, 500 workers led a walkout, the first of many that would take place in textile mills across the country over the next decade. African-American women were hampered in their attempts for a better life because of legal segregation in the South and discrimination throughout the country.
