Special Challenges When both parents are mothers and the child prefers one mother, the other may feel hurt and jealous, feeling she is rejected as a nurturer. Mothers may attribute the preference to temperamental similarities or to a genetic connection if there is one, but both parents have to find ways to feel comfortable with the situation or make changes that resolve the hurt feelings. One mother, for example, feeling inadequate and left out because she did not want the role of a typical mother and felt her child gravitated to the other mother, realized she preferred a more paternal role. She constructed her role as that of lesbian dad and felt much more comfortable. Gay fathers may have the same problem and have to resolve it as well.
