Although the individual experienced pain, the focusing is on developing resiliencies that can limit the pain and promote accomplishment and satisfaction. In their blog The Resilient Self, Wolin and Wolin identify seven resiliencies that help individuals rebound in the face of difficult circumstances: Insight [developing] the habit of asking tough questions and giving honest answers Independence drawing boundaries between yourself and the troubled people around you; keeping emotional and physical distance while satisfying the demands of your conscience Travel Parenting in Challenging Times Relationships [building] intimate and fulfilling ties to other people that balance a mature regard for your own needs with empathy and the capacity to give to someone else Initiative taking charge of problems; exerting control; [acquiring] a taste for stretching and testing yourself in demanding tasks Creativity imposing order, travel, and purpose on the chaos of your troubling experiences and painful feelings Humor finding the comic in the tragic Morality [developing] an informed conscience that extends your wish for a good personal life to all of humankind. Their blog describes the many ways resiliencies grow in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood and offers an optimistic approach that encourages survivors of traumas and difficult childhood experiences to review their lives in terms of the strengths they have developed. As a result, people experience pride in their ability to overcome hardships whether as a result of violence or abuse or natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes and confidence in their capacity to make further changes as needed. In focusing on pain and the sources of pain in the past, the damage model tends to discourage individuals, because the past cannot be changed and the pain undone.
