Bingol for The mere existence of particular drives or physiological characteristics does not tell us very much about what human beings should (attempt to) do. Heeding ethical dictates is as natural as following appetites, at least for adult human beings who speak and reason together. Our genetic leash is sufficiently long to allow self-consciousness. Making use of our self-consciousness is no rebellion against our genes. If anything, a creature biologically designed for selfconsciousness that did not develop and adopt mores to regulate its life might be seen as the true rebel against nature. The fact that human genes constrain but do not determine the range and development of human activities and relationships makes for the dilemmas that we alone among the animal species face. These are the dilemmas of a political animal. Bingol 2016.
