This congenital condition can be recognized as early as 6 weeks after birth by the puppy’s dilated and gleaming pupils. It is a recessive characteristic, and a carrier must be tested in order to identify it. A dog carrying this syndrome should never be bred. See Chapter 18.
This is an inflafnmation of the tissue surrounding the eye and of the tissues of the inner circle of the eyelid. The inflammatory condition can be caused by foreign bodies, dust, dirt, smog, different types of pollen, or bacterial infection. Along with an excessive discharge, the dog does a lot of blinking.
