WHERE TO GO SIGHTSEEING :
Quito: There is a lot to see in the capital itself. Quito is full of excellent examples of colonial art. Any of its churches is rewarding to the tourist. The Church of San Francisco is famous for its art treasures and cloisters. Women may not enter the cloisters without permission. La Compania, the church of the Jesuits, was built by Mohammedan workmen. All the churches have magnificent displays of gold, silver and jewels, exquisitely carved altars and vaulted ceilings brilliant with gold leaf. La Merced and the Chapel of the Virgin of the Rosary in the Church of Santo Domingo must be seen. Don‚„t miss Quito‚„s museums. See arts.
Quito is a city of steep streets, white houses and red-tiled roofs. Climb Panacillo for a breath-taking view of the city. In the Chillos Valley, about 1 hour away from Quito by car, are the thermal swimming pools of Alangasi and Tin go. Sightseeing tours: Quito city tour (2Vi hours); Equatorial Monument tour (2Vi hours); Valley of Chillos tour (3 hours). Rates are $5 to $7 for each of two persons.
Side Trips: The Indian Fair at Saquisili, on Thursdays only, is an interesting sight. The trip takes you by the snow-capped volcano of Cotopaxi. Saquisili is 1 hour and 45 minutes from Quito by car; the tour takes the whole day. A 2-day trip by car to Otavalo for the early Saturday Indian Fair, one of the largest in Ecuador, is fun. The Otavalo Indians weave wonderful woolen cloth that is not unlike Scotch tweed. Ambato, known as the garden city of Ecuador, is in the interior on the way to Banos, where the Amazon jungle starts. Banos is something of a summer resort and a spa; the climate is temperate. There are small, but comfortable and clean, hotels with good food. Go to Riobamba for market day if you can (110 miles south of Quito); it‚„s worth seeing. Santo Domingo is a little village of the Colorado Indians. They paint their bodies red and comb their hair in a way that resembles a helmet. Very interesting to tourists. Trips to any of the above-mentioned places must be arranged in Quito through a travel agency.
Guayaquil: The rail journey from Quito to this city descends from the Andes into the heart of the jungle. Guayaquil lies about 60 miles from the ocean on the Rio Guayas and has a pleasant tropical climate with an average temperature of 80 degrees. Hyacinths float on the river which teems with boats and ships. Guayaquil is the principal port of Ecuador and important commercial city.
