The theme of redemption is dominated by the theory of the satisfaction and expiation of Christ In Lc. III,48; VII,114. From Origen and Irenaeus Ambrose takes the idea of the passion and death of Christ as the price paid to the devil for the salvation of humankind In Lc. IV,11-12; VII,114-117; Ep. 72. Some of Ambrose’s works have as their principal theme the sacramental theology of reconciliation, baptism and the Eucharist mysterium sacramentum. His constant concern for the church see G. Toscani, Teologia della chiesa led Ambrose to reflect on the figure of Mary In Lc. and the work on virginity and her place in salvation history. He considers her life sinless and a model of every virtue but makes no clear statement of her exemption from original sin.
