ALTERCATIO ADRIANI ET EPICTETI Anonymous work of the 6th or 7th c. belonging to a group of monastic writings called Ioca monachorum, probably compiled in Gaul from a Greek original. A number of different recensions and many MSS existed already in the 8th c., showing the popularity of this literary genre. The work, written in a mediocre Latin, is a fictitious dialogue containing questions by the emperor Hadrian 117–138 and responses by the philosopher Epictetus d. 130, esp. concerning the Bible.
