African American and Native American Marriage

As formal, legal marriages were usually forbidden between African American slaves, weddings between slaves often followed traditions brought from Africa. One such custom consisted of the couple leaping over a broom together in the presence of other slaves. If possible, the ceremony was followed by a celebration of some form. Native American marriage customs varied from tribe to tribe. These marriages followed a formal process and had to be sanctioned by other members of the tribe. As in most cultural groups of the period, marriage was as much about the community as it was about the couple.
